HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME
In 1991, Prof. P.O. Bodunrin invited the following academics to start off the department:
– Prof. C.S. Ola
– Dr. A.O. Oba
– K.J. Osanyinbi, and
– S.A. Adereti
The first set of students came in immediately and they graduated in 1995/1996 session since then the department has been turning out graduates annually.
The programme is designed to meet three requirements, namely:
(i) The National University Commission minimum standards:
(ii) The new requirements for the award of the Professional Certificate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and other related bodies; and
(iii) Changes and developments in the theory and practice of the Accounting Profession in Nigeria and the world.
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF B.SC. ACCOUNTING PROGRAMME
The general philosophy is to develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on individuals to develop self-confidence, be innovative and self-reliant in the fields of Accounting and Management.
The need to develop men and women of good behaviour, unquestionable character, ethical conduct and moral uprightness coupled with sound academic competence that will enable them to compete adequately with their peers both nationally and internationally to fit into the academic and professional fields in commerce, industry and governance.
The objectives of Degree programme are to:
(i) Impart on the students basic knowledge of the concepts, theories, principles and practice of Accounting and Financial Management.
(ii) Teach students the application of management problems to the accomplishment of the techniques of accounting and financial management to the solution of objectives of entities and achievement of increase in the economic productivity and social welfare;
(iii) Develop the attributes of leadership and lubrication of inter-personal relationships required for working in industrial, commercial, educational, public and other organizations.
(iv) Equip students with the required academic and professional finesse that would make them develop needed competence to compete favourably with students of Accounting profession in other parts of the world.
(v) Contribute to the knowledge and practice of Accounting and financial management through research, development of intellectual horizon of students, attachment to reputable Accounting firms and orientating them to become proficient and professionally qualified Accountants.
(vi) To inculcate to students the capacity to be self-reliant and become employer of Labour.
The admission requirements for the B.Sc. Accounting Degree shall be as follows:
(i) Candidates seeking admission into four-year degree programme should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education (GCE) or their equivalents as approved by the University Senate from time to time, with at least five credit passes which must include two social science subjects. The relevant subjects must include English Language, mathematics and Economics or Commerce or both as two social science subjects. The candidates must also pass at the Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examinations (UTME) with the cut-off point as may be determined by the Senate from time to time but not below the minimum set by the other recognised Universities.
(ii) For the three year programme, a candidate is expected to possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education (GCE) or their equivalents as approved by the University Senate from time to time, with at least five credit passes which must include English language, Mathematics and Economics or Commerce. The candidates should also possess credit passes in Economics or Commerce and Accounting or mathematics at the Advanced level.
(iii) Candidates who possess pass in the whole of the Foundation Examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) or of any other recognized Accountancy body OR pass all the stages of the Accounting Technicians Scheme are also eligible.
(iv) Candidates who scored a minimum of Upper Credit in national Diploma (ND) in Accounting or University of Ado-Ekiti Diploma Certificate in Accounting.
(v) Candidates who possess HND in relevant discipline with at least lower credit in addition to five credit passes stated above.
(vi) In addition, the candidates for the (iii to v) above must possess the basic ordinary level requirements as stated in (ii) above.
THE DEGREE PROGRAMME
The Department of Accounting offers a Degree Programme leading to the award of B.Sc. (Honours) Degree in Accounting.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF FIRST DEGREE
One of the requirements for awarding first degree is the attachment of students to reputable organisations like firms of chartered accountants, banks, companies, educational institutions, civil service, etc; for a period not less than 2 months to coincide with the period between the end of 2nd Semester in 300 level and the proceeding 1st Semester in 400 level
