Mission Statement of the Department:

We major in the teaching and research works in the field of Microbiology. Our academic programme provide is devoted to studying fundamentals, basic and applied principles of Microbiology and other scientific applications of the academic disciplines.

A Brief History of the Creation, Past and Current Leadership of the Department:
The Department of Microbiology was initially known as the Department of Applied Microbiology when it was established in 1984. The Department started temporarily from Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti with three (3) members of staff and eighteen students.  The pioneer staff were Prof. O. Famurewa, Prof. (Mrs.) E.Y. Aderibigbe and Prof. J.K. Oloke.  The Department moved to the Mini-campus situated along Ado-Iworoko road in 1985 and has grown tremendously in students’ enrolment and staffing.

In 1987, it was merged as the Department of Botany and Applied Microbiology since there were few senior hands on ground for administrative purpose.  It once again became a separate Department in October, 1989. Academic staff of the Department in the late 80s included Prof. S.K. Ogundana, Dr. M.A. Faluyi, Dr. J.A. Akinyanju, Dr. O.A. Akande, Dr. O. Famurewa, Dr. W.M. Kpikpi, Mrs. E.Y. Aderibigbe, Mrs. T. Onifade, Mr. J.K. Oloke and Mr. J. Kayode. The current Head of Department is Dr. Mrs. Femi-Ola.

Admission Requirements
Requirements for students intending to read for the B.Sc. Degree in Microbiology are those for entry into the University.

UME: Four-year Programme
The qualifying subjects must include a Credit Pass in
Biology or Agricultural Science (not Health Science) Chemistry in addition to Mathematics, English Language and at least P7 in Physics in the S.S.C Examination or its equivalent or must have successfully completed the University’s Pre-Degree Programme.
Direct Entry: Second year of the Degree Programme
Students must have passed in at least two subjects at the Advanced (‘A’) Level of the General Certificate of Education or its equivalent, which include Biology and Chemistry and must satisfy (i) above.

Requirements for the Award of the B.Sc. Degree
To be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Microbiology of this University, a candidate must satisfy the following:

1. The normal University requirement, including satisfactory completion of the twenty units of General Studies (GST).
2. The Faculty of Science requirements by passing ALL the units (30) of foundation courses.
3. The departmental requirements by passing ALL (93) units of the Departmental Courses and 28 units of elective courses.
