Mission Statement of the Department:
We are committed to the strategies for meeting the manpower needs of our nation – Nigeria by developing and preparing our students to gain adequate knowledge in the study of Plant physiology, Ecology, Genetics, Taxonomy, Biochemistry, Mycology, Horticulture, Reproduction, Pathology and Conservation required to contribute to national life in their future career paths.
General Information on the Framework and Services of the Department:
The objectives of the programmes is the production of experts to meet the nations’ man-power needs by a curriculum designed to make them to carry out independent research in all fields of Plant Science and to provide higher level man-power relevant to national needs.
The undergraduate programme prepares our graduates for future career work in higher institutions of learning, secondary schools, research institutes, government establishments, industries, consulting organizations and non-government organizations. Students are also guided in their selection of courses that best suit their capability and interest. In the final year, each students undertake a research project under the supervision of academic staff and present written report and seminar papers on approved areas so as to give them basic insight into research methodology and career opportunities.
In the postgraduate years, students are made to develop their ability to manage industrial, agricultural and forest research management, educational, medicinal and veterinary sciences. In order to achieve the stated objectives, students are exposed to current and extensive knowledge of the theory and practical aspects of plant physiology, ecology, genetics, taxonomy, biochemistry, mycology, horticulture, reproduction, pathology and conservation.
General Information on the Organs and Activities of the Department
Degree Programmes offered by the Department are:
1. B.Sc (Hons) Plant Science
2. Postgraduate Diploma in Plant Resources Management
3. M.Sc. and Ph.D in the field of:
(i) Lower Green Plants Ecology (ii) Plant Resources Management (iii) Plant Pathology
(iv) Plant Breeding and Genetics and (v) Plant Physiology and Biochemistry.
Candidates for admission to the Bachelor’s degree programme – B.Sc (Hons) Plant Science must have at least five credit passes in SSCE, NECO/GCE ‘O’ level or its equivalent in one sitting in the following subjects, Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and any other subject. Candidates who have satisfied the EKSU Pre-Degree programme are also eligible.
Postgraduate Diploma Programme
Admission into the programme is open to graduates of Plant Science and related disciplines of EKSU and any other University recognized by the Senate of the EKSU
M.Sc. Degree Programme
Candidate with good Honours degree in Plant Science, Botany or related fields from EKSU and other recognized Universities are eligible for admission. The related fields include Agriculture, Microbiology. Biochemistry and other areas as may be considered necessary.
Candidate for admission must have an average master’s degree score of at least 60% in Botany or fields closely related to Botany or Plant Science.
