Dignitaries stormed Oodua Auditorium of Ekiti State University, Ado –Ekiti on Monday, September 21, 2015 for the first Professor Oladipo Aina Public Lecture as The lecture was to mark the international Peace Day. It was organised by a Non-Governmental, Non-Profit making organization, (NGO). Peace Building and Human Development Centre in Collaboration with the Rotary Club of Ado Ekiti.
According to the President of The NGO Centre who is also the newly elected president of Rotary Club of Ado – Metro, Rotarian Ayo Olowoyeye, the United Nations set aside every September 21 of each year as the International day of Peace which must be celebrated by Nations, groups or individuals as a day of cease fire in conflicts, a day a reconciliation and a day to do good to someone and make peace.
Rotarian Olowoyeye said the Public Lecture was intended to be a forum where topical issues can be addressed and solutions or way forward are suggested for the purpose of enhancing good governance at all levels of human groupings
He added that the decision to have the Public Lecture in honour of EKSU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick Oladipo Aina was in recognition of the breadth taking unprecedented achievements of the Vice-Chancellor in over three years (2011 to 2015).
The Theme of this year’s International day of Peace is “Partnership for peace, Dignity for All” while the Sub Theme which captured the first Professor Oladipo Aina Public Lecture is “Alternative to Strike Actions”.
Leading the University’s Principal Officers to the event who represented the Vice-Chancellor was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Victor Olufemi Adeoluwa, Others are Mr. B. A. Adeoya representing the Registrar, Mr. Owolabi Titiloye representing the Bursar and the University Librarian, Mr. Nathaniel Ajayi, Other invited organisations and Unions were the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Ekiti State, Civil Societies organisations, University Staff Unions and others.
Delivering the Lecture, the Former Registrar of Ekiti State University, Dr. Omojola Awosusi said that prior to the coming of the British and Colonization between 1914 and 1960, Nigerian Society was not engaging in any government employer-employee relationship as everyone participated in Agriculture for family and economy needs.
Dr. Awosusi who commended the effort of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oladipo Aina for running an open and labour friendly administration said between 2007 and 2013 Nigerian Universities lost so many months of the academic Calendar due to industrial crisis.
He went further to enumerate the types of industrial actions, causes of strike and also discuss the big question of whether strike is legal or not. The lecturer supported his position with legal decisions.
The gathering deliberated on Alternatives to industrial actions which include dialogue, concession and compromise while noting that open communication is an effective way of eliminating misconceptions between management and labour unions.
Prof. Wale Olajide the Director of General Studies gave a detailed PowerPoint presentation of the numerous achievements of the Vice-Chancellor which was applauded.
The representative of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Victor Adeoluwa thanked the organisers of the Public lecture, he described the Vice-Chancellor as a divine gift to the University adding that he has raised the bar of leadership and left his footprints on the sands of time.
He said that the Vice-Chancellor has completed new buildings and reconstructed structures numbering thirty- one, a feat that is unprecedented in the history of Ekiti State University.
