The Governing Council of EKiti State University at its 133rd Meeting on Tuesday 14 May, 2019 flagged off the commencement of the process for the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor. This is coming up about three months after the inauguration of the Governing Council . Within the short period of its existence the Governing Council has considered and implemented and implementing most of the recommendations in the Government White Paper.
Addressing the Council members, the Chairman, Prof Bamitale Omole in a Press Statement said that in consonance with the transformation and reformation agenda of Dr Kayode Fayemi administration for all tertiary institutions in Ekiti State, he said that the Governing Council is determined to ensure that the exercise is thorough, transparent, and transpicuous. He further added that the process will not only be fair, it will be devoid of any opaqueness or favoritism. He emphasized that merit, competence, capacity and capability to run a university in the global intellectual market of the 21st Century will be the hallmark of the exercise.
Prof Omole in his address therefore appealed to members of the university community both academic and non-teaching staff to kindly ensure that issues surrounding the process are not categorized in a reductive/destructive manner or subsumed in the framework of fraternities, religion or native identities.
The Chairman also seized the occasion of his address to thank the Governor of the State, Dr Kayode Fayemi for his strong support to the university especially the payment of salary which was unlike what was the experience in the last administration in the state. He therefore enjoined workers to be patient with Council and Government as issues of welfare of staff, prompt payment of salary and payment of backlog of salaries owed the workers by the last administration will continue to be the priority of this present government. He also thank the Visitor to the University and Governor of the State, Dr Kayode Fayemi for his non-interference in the affairs of the Governing Council .
The Chairman finally said that pursuant to the university law guiding the excercise, advertisement for the position of a Vice-Chancellor will run for six weeks in major national newspapers following which a well constituted university search party will have two weeks to do its work and thereafter a Selection Panel will interview candidates for the position.
