It was a day of academic glory and personal fulfillment for Prof. Olabisi Idowu Aina, Director, Centre for Gender and Development Studies and wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Prof. Patrick Oladipo Aina as she was decorated with prestigious honour of Fellow of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria (FSSA).
The event took place at Merit House, Abuja and attracted dignitaries from various academic institutions, United Nations, World Bank Agencies, Federal Ministries as well as the Business and Corporate World.
The Social Science Academy of Nigeria, formerly called Social Science Council of Nigeria was inaugurated on December 23, 1983 with the objectives of harnessing and developing the capacity of Nigerian Social Scientists, encourage inter-disciplinary and multi disciplinary approaches to the study of Social problems in Nigeria as well as promote the advancement of the Social Sciences disciplines with particular emphasis on the encouragement of innovation and indigenization of Social Sciences theory and application.
The academy is the umbrella organisation of all Social Science Faculties, research institutions and learned societies in Nigeria and it elects Fellows of the academy from the rank of full Professor in the Social Sciences with not less than ten years standing.
A Fellow designate must also have proven to be a distinguished academic with scholarly presentations of international reckoning.
Welcoming the guests to the main hall of the Merit House, the president of the Academy, Prof. Uvie A, Igun B.Sc, M.Sc (Sociology) Ph.D Manchester and Vice-Chancellor, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Delta State said the academy had selected six distinguished academics for investiture as fellows of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria.
Leading the selection nominees was Prof. Olabisi Aina, a professor of Sociology and current Director of Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Ekiti State University and wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oladipo Aina.
Prof. Olabisi Aina graduated with second class upper division in sociology and anthropology from the University of Ife in 1979, she followed it up with a Master’s Degree in philosophy in sociology and anthropology and a Doctorate Degree.
In the course of her higher education, Prof. Olabisi Aina garnered several distinctions and awards among which are Ford Foundation Scholarship to pursue her Doctorate Degree, Caldaria Award for Ph.D. thesis; Canadian International Development Agency Award for women studies, fellowship award under the WISCONSIN – OAU linkage in African American Studies as well as the British Chevening Scholarship.
Prof. Olabisi Aina described her elevation as a fulfillment of personal ambition and honor to reach the highest level of academic attainment in her field.
A prolific writer and scholar, she has to her credit 34 articles in national and international journals, twelve chapters in books 26 technical reports, 6 monogrphy and countless addresses delivered at International conferences.
Prof. O. I. Aina had served as head of department and Dean of Faculty at Obafemi Awolowo University; Acting Dean as a visiting professor at Lagos State University and Delegate to the 2014 National Conference.
She is married to the Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Prof. Patrick Oladipo Aina who led the University delegation to the investiture ceremony in Abuja.
