The management of Ekiti State University has organized a 3 day seminar/retreat for the institutions students union leaders to equip them with leadership skills needed to lead the 21st century students union. The retreat took place at Ikogosi Warm Spring, Ikogosi Ekiti
At the official opening ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele commended the student for their serious approach to the seminar designed to increase their capacity to lead and take appropriate decisions at all times.
Prof. Bandele said that union leaders, their must learn to be tolerant, decent, thoughtful and dynamic. According to him, unionism does not imply the same thing as hooliganism and thuggery but an informed platform to get the best for the students population.
The Vice- Chancellor advised the students to embrace dialogue and consultation at all times adding that a union leader who failed to graduate due to misbehavior or over zealousness would be a disgrace to the society.
In one of the lectures delivered at the seminar titled “Engendering Harmonious Relationship between Student Union Leaders and Management”, a former registrar of Ekiti State University, Dr Omojola Awosusi went down memory to highlight the roles of union leaders who had led ill-fated protests against constituted authorities and advised that as union leaders, they must be careful when they intend to lead students on protests because it could be difficult to stop volatile students demonstration.
Dr. Awosusi said that student’s union leaders should always go into negotiation with management with a mindset that they would get some and lose some.
The students union leaders at the seminar held between Friday 17th and Sunday 19th February, 2017 were accompanied by the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Williams Adebayo, Director of EKSU consult, Prof. Femi Omotoso, Director of Students Affairs, Mr. B. A. Adeoya and the Chief Security Officer, Rtd. Captain Ajayi.
